This small church in a field set against mountains is as striking for its ancient history and connections to Gregory of Nazianzus (also known as Gregory the Theologian) as for its lonely beauty. Standing alone in a field beneath a hill, the Red Church is a monument to the ancient history of Christianity in modern Turkey. Estimates of its date of construction range between the fourth and the sixth centuries AD. Evidently its secluded location preserved it from being turned into a mosque like so many other churches in Turkey after the Ottoman triumph over the Byzantine Empire. But a possible connection to Gregory of Nazianzus, one of three Cappadocian Church Fathers whose influence against corrupt views of Christ and the Trinity, together with Athanasius in Alexandria, defeated Arianism and a host of other related heresies, is what makes this abandoned church most precious. The church is located in the vicinity of Gregory's family estate to which he returned at the end of his life. It is reputed to be where Gregory was buried--an asymmetrical second nave on the left side of the church indicates the possibility of a significant entombment. It's also possible that the church came later, perhaps built in honor of Gregory the Thelogian. Look at the ground in front of the church and you will see a well still filled with water and what appears to be a stone baptism trough. The church is in rough shape, but some restoration of the dome was recently completed.

A very beautiful ancient Orthodox church in the outskirts of Güzelyurt, Cappadocia Region. However it is quite dilapidated and neglected. The road to Red Church is also pretty patchy and bad. You can still see some carvings on the walls.
